Dissertation note: Bakalářská práce (Bc.) -- Metropolitní univerzita Praha, o.p.s., Katedra International Relations and European Studies, 2020
Abstract: The dissertation's objective is to provide an institutional analysis of feminicide in Mexico during the administration of Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018). The ultimate goal of the thesis is to find out the reasons behind the upsurge in violent crimes against women in contemporary Mexico despite of the institutional measures adopted by Peña Nieto’s government. In order to answer the question, the dissertation has analysed the formal and informal gender norms taken by the Mexican government using Feminist Institutionalism as the theoretical framework. The analysis of formal gender norms revealed that effective policy making and enforcement is prevented by the inaccuracy of data on feminicides and by the fact that gender mainstreaming has not been applied equally in all levels of government. The correlation was also found between the inaccuracy of data and the levels of impunity for feminicides in Mexico. The analysis of informal gender norms revealed that impunity is caused by the social justification for the reason of violence, the lack of immediate response, nonexistent or insufficient judicial support, gender discrimination and re-victimization of the victims and their families. It can be therefore concluded that there exists a discrepancy in Mexico between formal and informal gender norms, a discrepancy which hinders efforts to reduce the violence against women in the country. The suggestion is that there should be a priority of Mexican government to strive to provide accurate data on feminicides and to review all individual cases of femincides. Accurate data would allow for a deeper understanding of the problem on behalf of different institutional actors within Mexican government and it would enhance their inter-institutional collaboration with a gendered perspective.
